Page Experience

Page Experience is a Google ranking signal that bundles Core Web Vitals, mobile-friendliness, HTTPS security, and lack of intrusive interstitials. Pages with good page experience get a ranking boost.

Page Experience is Google's umbrella term for the user-facing quality of a page. It was introduced in 2020 (mobile) and 2021 (desktop) and bundles: Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, and absence of intrusive interstitials (popups that block the page on load).

Page Experience is a ranking signal, but not a dominant one. Google has been clear: content relevance and quality matter more than page experience. A poor page-experience site with brilliant content can still outrank a great-page-experience site with mediocre content. But when content is roughly equal, page experience tips the comparison.

The components: (1) Core Web Vitals — see the separate glossary entry. (2) Mobile-friendliness — does the page work on mobile (responsive design, readable text, tap targets sized correctly)? (3) HTTPS — the page is served over HTTPS, not HTTP. (4) No intrusive interstitials — no full-screen popups that block content on load (excludes age verification, cookie banners, and login walls).

Mobile-friendliness is now table stakes; 95%+ of new sites pass without effort because responsive design is the default. HTTPS is also table stakes (Let's Encrypt makes it free). The two areas where most sites fail page experience: Core Web Vitals and intrusive interstitials. Both are addressable in a few days of focused work.

Example

A new product launch site has great content but ships with: a hero LCP of 4.8s (failing CWV), an autoplay-video popup on page load (intrusive interstitial), and HTTP instead of HTTPS. Page-experience score is poor and rankings stagnate. Fixing those three things over a week sees rankings climb 12-15 positions on multiple target queries within 30 days.
