Keyword Difficulty

Keyword Difficulty (KD) is a 0–100 score from SEO tools (Ahrefs, Moz, SEMrush) estimating how hard it is to rank in the top 10 for a given keyword. Higher means harder.

Keyword Difficulty is a per-keyword estimate of competition strength. The score is built primarily from the average backlink profile of the pages currently ranking on page 1 for that query. A keyword where the top 10 pages average 500+ referring domains is high-KD; a keyword where the top 10 average 5 referring domains is low-KD.

Typical KD bands: 0–20 (easy, new sites can rank with quality content alone), 20–50 (moderate, need consistent SEO + some links), 50–70 (hard, need real authority + topical depth), 70+ (very hard, only major-brand SERPs). Each SEO tool uses its own scoring so the same keyword can show KD 42 in Ahrefs and KD 58 in SEMrush — use one tool consistently.

KD is a starting filter, not a verdict. Three reasons a low-KD keyword might still be hard: (1) SERP features (featured snippet, knowledge panel, video carousel) reduce organic click-through. (2) Intent mismatch — the SERP is dominated by a page type you can't credibly produce. (3) Domain-level competition — even if the page-level competition looks easy, Google may favor known brands on that query regardless of page-level signals.

How to use KD strategically: filter your keyword list to KD-under-your-DA. If your DA is 25, target keywords with KD under 25 first; build authority on those wins; revisit higher-KD keywords once your DA climbs. Trying to rank for KD 60 keywords on a DA 10 site is usually a 12+ month project; targeting KD 15 keywords might rank within 4-8 weeks of publishing.

Tools and pricing: Ahrefs Keyword Explorer ($129+/mo) is the most-cited KD source; SEMrush ($139+/mo) is comparable; Moz ($99+/mo) is similar but with smaller index; Mangools KWFinder ($30/mo) is a budget option. Most teams get a one-month seat at launch, pull their top 1,000 candidate keywords, then drop the subscription.

Example

A SaaS targets 'AI website builder for restaurants' (KD 12, 480 monthly searches) instead of 'AI website builder' (KD 78, 22,000 monthly searches). The lower-KD keyword ranks at position 3 within 60 days; the higher-KD keyword would have taken 12-18 months. The lower-KD keyword drives the actual conversions because it's a higher-intent query.
