Dwell Time

Dwell time is the duration a visitor stays on a page after clicking from search results, before returning to the SERP. Long dwell time is a positive signal; short dwell time (a 'pogo-stick') is negative.

Dwell time is the time elapsed between a user clicking a search result and returning to the search-engine results page. It's a behavioral signal Google can measure (within session-scope) and use to infer whether a page met the user's intent.

Google has been cagey about whether dwell time is directly used in rankings — likely because it's noisy and easily gamed. But independent SEO studies consistently show correlation: pages with longer average dwell times rank higher on competitive SERPs over time. The mechanism may be indirect (via aggregated behavioral signals, satisfied users return-visiting, etc.) but the relationship is real.

Dwell time is NOT the same as time-on-page (a GA4 metric). Time-on-page measures the gap between pageviews and doesn't apply to bounces; dwell time specifically applies to traffic from search. The two correlate but aren't identical.

How to extend dwell time: lead with the answer (so users feel they're in the right place), include depth that rewards continued reading (data, examples, screenshots, code samples), break up the page visually so the eye keeps moving, embed video or interactive elements (which keep users engaged), and link to related internal pages from within the body (a second pageview before returning to SERP doesn't count against dwell time).

The opposite — 'pogo-sticking' — is when a user clicks your result, bounces back to SERP, and clicks the next result. This is a strong negative signal. The cure is usually intent-mismatch: your page targets a query the user didn't actually mean. Fix the targeting or fix the page.

Example

A page targeting 'how to add a custom domain to my AI builder' has 12-second average dwell time — users bounce because the page is a generic sales pitch rather than a step-by-step tutorial. Rewriting it as an actual step-by-step with screenshots increases dwell to 4:30 minutes; rankings improve from position 9 to position 3 over 90 days.
