Content cluster

A content cluster is a group of related pages organized around a central pillar page — using internal links to signal topical authority to search engines.

Content clusters are the organizational pattern most modern SEO content strategies use. A pillar page covers a broad topic comprehensively; cluster pages (8–30+) cover narrower sub-topics; internal links from cluster pages point back to the pillar, and from the pillar to each cluster page.

The model emerged from HubSpot's research in 2017 and has become the dominant SEO content structure since. The hypothesis: rather than chasing individual keywords with isolated pages, build topical authority through a structured set of pages that demonstrate deep coverage. Sites that adopted the cluster model in 2018–2020 saw measurable lifts in ranking for the pillar's head term, sometimes 3–10 positions.

Cluster architecture: one pillar page (long-form, head term), 8–30 cluster pages (medium-form, mid-tail keywords), 30+ leaf pages (short-form, long-tail keywords). Each cluster page links to the pillar (always) and to 2–3 sibling cluster pages (contextually). The pillar links to every cluster page in a 'related' section.

How to choose clusters: identify the head term (high-volume, competitive), brainstorm sub-topics that buyers actually search (use Google's 'People also ask', Reddit, customer support tickets), and group them into 8–30 distinct cluster topics. Avoid clusters where two sub-topics are near-duplicates — those should be a single page with two H2 sections.

In 2026, content clusters compound with LLM search. A well-structured cluster gets cited in ChatGPT / Perplexity answers because the LLMs can navigate the internal-link graph to find the most authoritative page per sub-topic. The 'cluster on AI website builders' authority signal works on Google AND on LLM citation queries — double-counted ROI.

Example

Website Killer's 'AI website builder' cluster: pillar at /learn/ai-website-builder-101 (head term), cluster pages at /learn/prompting-for-websites, /learn/seo-for-ai-sites, /vs/lovable, /vs/v0, /vs/bolt, /alternatives/wordpress, and 14 more. Total cluster ~24 pages, all linking to the pillar; pillar links to all cluster pages in a 'related' section.
