Anchor Text
Anchor text is the clickable text of a hyperlink. Google uses anchor text as a signal for what the linked page is about — relevant anchor text helps the linked page rank for that topic.
Anchor text is the visible, clickable portion of a hyperlink. In HTML: `<a href='/page'>this is the anchor text</a>`. Anchor text matters for SEO because Google uses it as a signal about the linked page's topic — many quality anchor-text descriptions saying 'best AI website builder' linking to your page tell Google your page is about best AI website builders.
Types of anchor text: (1) Exact-match — the anchor is the exact keyword you're targeting ('AI website builder'). (2) Partial-match — includes the keyword plus other words ('best AI website builder for restaurants'). (3) Branded — your brand name ('Website Killer'). (4) Generic — 'click here', 'this site', 'learn more'. (5) Naked URL — 'https://example.com'. (6) Image alt text — the alt text on a linked image.
Anchor-text profile: Google looks at the DISTRIBUTION of anchor texts pointing to a page. A natural backlink profile has a mix: ~30% branded, ~30% partial-match, ~15% naked URL, ~15% generic, ~10% exact-match. A page with 80% exact-match anchor text looks manipulated (link-building scheme) and can trigger algorithmic penalties.
Internal anchor text: anchor text on internal links (your own pages linking to your other pages) is fully under your control. Use it deliberately — link to your /pricing page with anchor text 'AI website builder pricing' rather than 'click here'. But still vary: don't use identical anchor text 50 times across the site, because over-optimization can trigger penalties at the internal-link level too.
How to influence external anchor text without manipulation: write linkable assets that naturally invite specific anchors (a study titled 'The 2026 State of AI Website Builders' tends to be linked with that exact title), provide suggested HTML snippets in your tools' embed code, and pitch guest posts with anchor text matching the content. Never pay for anchor text or buy links from anchor-text-controlled networks.
Example
A page targeting 'AI website builder for agencies' has 40 backlinks. Distribution: 12 branded ('Website Killer'), 11 partial-match ('AI website builder for agencies / agency-grade AI builder'), 6 naked URL, 5 generic ('this tool / great option'), 5 exact-match ('AI website builder for agencies'), 1 anchor from an image alt. Diverse and natural; the page ranks position 2 for the target query.
